Despite the extensive use of explosives for mining and other applications for more than a century, the high temperature and pressure microscopic material evolution found within a detonating explosive has yet to be elucidatedI will present the first quantum molecular-dynamics simulations of detonating organic explosives. Enabled by a recent multi-scale simulation method that provides a 10^8 computational speedup, these simulations provide the first glimpse into the detonation process and reveal that remarkable unexpected ultrafast transformations in chemical and electronic properties occur within 100 picoseconds behind the detonation shock front.
