===Stephen Foiles, Ph.D.=== ==Grain Growth: A Case Study in Multiscale Modeling== Thursday, March 4, 2010 <br> Building 60 Room 120 The microstructure of a material, including its grain size, strongly influences a wide range of materials properties such as strength, toughness and corrosion resistance. Thus the understanding of grain growth is a long-standing topic in materials science. This problem is inherently multi-scale in that the overall growth must describe the evolution of the network of grain boundaries. The driving forces for this motion, energy and interface stiffness, and the motion of individual boundaries are driven by properties of the grain boundaries that are controlled at the atomic scale. This talk will demonstrate how combining information and insight garnered from atomic-level simulations of grain boundaries with simulations of the grain boundary network evolution at the mesoscale leads to important new insights into grain growth.
