Abstract Title: Simulating hydrogen embrittlement and fast pathways for diffusion in austenitic stainless steels

 

Experimental observations in austenitic stainless steels exposed to gaseous hydrogen illustrate the hastening of void evolution and the possibility of fast pathways for diffusion. In an effort to capture these sub-grid processes, we have developed models for void nucleation and finite deformation localization elements for both damage evolution and hydrogen transport. Akin to cohesive zone elements, localization elements relegate processes to a surface but construct 3D deformation gradients and concentration gradients through jumps in the displacement and concentration, respectively. This approach enables one to employ bulk models for damage evolution and hydrogen transport to simulate crack propagation. We apply these techniques within the finite element method to 21Cr-6Ni-9Mn exposed to gaseous hydrogen.

 

I will also attempt to place this effort in the context of other ongoing work at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, CA.
